First Appointments in International Arbitration: Olga Kokoz Speaks at RIAC 2026
On 25 September 2026, as part of the Russian International Arbitration Congress (RIAC 2026), Olga Kokoz took part in the open discussion “The Way of the Samurai: How Young Arbitrators Can Get Appointed in International Disputes”, organised by the Russian Arbitrator Guide.
The discussion focused on the first steps in building a career as an international arbitrator: how to secure a first appointment, develop a professional reputation, and make one’s profile more visible to arbitral institutions, appointing authorities, and counsel.
The participants discussed the factors considered when selecting arbitrators, the role of professional networks and involvement in the arbitration community, as well as the practical challenges faced by practitioners who are only beginning to develop their own arbitration practice.
Particular attention was paid to the Middle East and Asia — regions that are becoming increasingly important in the context of international disputes involving a Russian element.
The discussion formed part of the RIAC 2026 programme, which brought together practising lawyers, academics, and experts to discuss current trends and the future development of international arbitration.
